Mental Fitness, Masculinity, Plant Medicine, and Pressing Forward - Neal Conlon
This episode is taking on three things we have yet to tackle on this show; Mental Fitness + Masculinity + Plant Medicine. Neal Conlon is joining to share about his journey from Marine veteran to corporate to startups and cyber security technology to what he is calling his own personal development reset. In all of that he has had one core purpose; to create and provide safety and security for others.
Neal is wildly transparent on this show and his social media about his experiences in this thing called life, the good, the bad, the really bad, and the successes that come when you press forward.
Episode Highlights:
{3:19} A lot of times the thing that we think we are working on is not the thing that we are going to end up working on.
{7:19} You can't enjoy joy when you aren't feeling safe in your environments. As a result we end up acting out in ways that don't give us joy.
{12:16} You have a responsibility to your 30 year old self to not have 20 year old problems. And to people in their 40s, you have a responsibility to your 50 year old self to not have the problems of a 30 year old because it's going to catch up with you.
{15:49} There is value men in being taught to be strong, while also recognizing the importance in empathy, mindfulness, and gratitude. However, the rest of the world is not as draw into those traits. This has created a big misunderstanding on what masculinity really is in the world today.
{18:17} 2020 left people feeling anxious, disjointed, and disconnected. Yet Neal was able to use that time for introspection and recognize that his mental fitness was what helped him thrive.
{22:54} Having a personal board of directors is a very powerful way to set yourself up for success. Life is more transactional than we often realize, which is why the people you have on your board is so important.
{25:33} Coaching isn't about the money for Neal. It's about the financial transaction that a person is willing to make in order to invest in themselves to make the change.
{27:56} 2020 is when the retreats and coaching took off, 2021 started Integrating plant medicine into coaching and retreats, and 2022 brought coaching in the Fortune 500 space. 2023 is taking all of that and expanding including at the worlds most dangerous hotel.
{30:13} Neals skillset is doing the work and helping others do the work. He works as the compass to help them do what they are setting out to do.
{31:26} Men have a responsibility to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. The build mental fitness by pushing those norms.
{36:03} As his daughter grew up it really shifted his perspective on women and what they need and how men need to show up differently.
