It’s the Simple Things That Ignite a Spark

Have you ever looked back at a trip, a season, or even a year and realized the moments that stuck with you weren’t the ones you meticulously planned? The magic came in the in-between.

This idea hit me hard after my conversation with Bob and Rick Allen on a past episode. They both have an incredible history as Disney leaders and have continued to create magic well after retirement. Every time I see a blog shared by them, listen to a clip of their stories, or reflect on the time they spent with my son and I at Hollywood Studios, I am reminded that while the world chases big achievements, joy often sneaks in through a side door. The lasting sparks of joy are found in the quiet, silly, unscripted moments.

It’s actually why I stopped making detailed itineraries when I worked in travel. When families focused too much on “what didn’t happen,” they missed the moments that did. The spontaneous hugs. The shared laughs. The unexpected magic.

Over the past few months, as life threw some curveballs at our family. It’s not been easy, especially knowing there is only so much any of us can control. But there has been a lot of comfort found in a way we often overlook. The simple things are what have saved me. A quiet walk. A child’s joke. A good acai bowl. Sunset ice cream at the lake.

Those simple moments became everything.

This week’s episode is both a reflection and a return. My first solo show in a while, with many more to come. Because I’m realizing: people don’t need perfection. They need permission.

So here is my permission to you to pause, to reflect, and to embrace the spark in the everyday.

What simple moment sparked joy for you today? Let that be enough.

Read, listen, share. And most of all, stay curious.
